Winter's temperatures can be harsh on your home's plumbing. Water in pipes can freeze and expand, thus causing pipes to burst and flood your home or garage!
Here are some tips to help prevent your pipes from freezing this winter.
Here are some tips to help prevent your pipes from freezing this winter.
- Close outside vents, crawl space accesses, and doors.
- Seal gaps or cracks in your house or foundation that might let in cold air.
- Ensure you’ve had your sprinklers winterized and any external plumbing that supplies them drained. Keep your garage door closed to prevent cold air from reaching pipes and water heaters.
- If you're going to be away, keep an eye on expected temperatures and set your thermostat accordingly — always above 55 degrees.
- Run a small amount of water through vulnerable pipes — the moving water helps prevent them from freezing.
- Wrap pipes with heat tape insulation in unheated areas like crawlspaces.
