This week we’re celebrating Juneteenth National Independence Day! Juneteenth is a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. June 19, 1865 was when Major General Gordon Granger ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Galveston, Texas, more than two years after the proclamation was issued.
Juneteenth celebrants participate in parades and marches highlighting African American culture and heritage, hold community gatherings and festivals combining food, music, and cultural performances, and gather with family and friends to eat traditional Southern foods like BBQ ribs, fried chicken, and collard greens. Sounds pretty good to us!
It is also a time to support Black-owned businesses and to reflect on the struggles and achievements of African Americans throughout history.
All of these activities not only celebrate freedom and African American history and culture but also serve as a reminder of the importance of continuing the fight for equality and justice!
In solidarity,
Jill & Team
